About Bryan Kennedy

Mayor Kennedy

Bryan Kennedy is the four-term Mayor of Glendale, Wisconsin, and the current President of Democratic Municipal Officials (DMO), the official constituency of the Democratic National Committee that represents tens of thousands of Democratic mayors, city council members, school board members, and other local elected leaders across the United States. With a political résumé that spans grassroots organizing, union leadership, academia, and executive governance, Kennedy brings a rare combination of real-world experience, strategic insight, and unshakable commitment to Democratic values.

Kennedy’s journey into political leadership began not in Washington, but in the break rooms and meeting halls of America’s working class. As a union organizer and state labor leader, Kennedy helped defend workers’ rights during some of the most challenging moments for labor in Wisconsin’s recent history.

Prior to his political career, Kennedy was a university professor of Latin American Studies, where he researched economic development among Brazil’s underclass—a role that shaped his thoughtful, accessible communication style and commitment to education as a public good. His academic training taught him the importance of listening first—of analyzing how language shapes perception, identity, and belonging.   Kennedy brings an educator’s clarity and depth to his political analysis, breaking down complex issues into language that resonates across class, race, and geography.

Kennedy is not just a theorist or a figurehead—he’s a grassroots campaigner who has knocked on thousands of doors, run in contested races, and won on the strength of personal connection. His first campaign for Congress in 2004 was a longshot bid in a Republican-gerrymandered district, but he ran it the only way he knew how: locally, personally, and relationally. That race, and the lessons he carried forward from it, laid the foundation for his later success in municipal government—on the school board, and then at City Hall. Since his first election as Mayor of Glendale in 2015, Kennedy has guided the city through economic revitalization, community-led development, and inclusive governance, building a model of progressive local leadership that is grounded in listening, transparency, and accountability. As Mayor, he sees firsthand how policy and politics play out in the daily lives of constituents—and how disconnected national messaging often feels to those struggling with local issues like housing, transportation, and education.

In February 2011, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker announced a bill that would all but eliminate public sector collective bargaining in Wisconsin. Kennedy led marches, spoke at rallies, appeared on national news outlets, and joined the thousands who occupied the state capitol building for weeks.
